Vitamin B deficiency leads to Diabetes: Experts

Karachi—Merck Pakistan has organized symposia here drawing attention to the symptoms side effects of Vitamins B deficiency, in which a number of experts shared their views.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Dr. Abu Noem Faruqui (Abbasi Shaheed Hospital) maintained that various conditions like malnutrition/diabetes etc. were associated with Vitamin B deficiency suggested supplementation of vitamin B1, B6 B12. Professor Dr. Jamal Ara (JPMC) told that the number of diabetes patients worldwide was expected to rise from 366 million in 2011 to 552 million by 2030. Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Sheikh (Liaquat University of Medical Health Sciences Jamshoro) informed that innumerable people suffered from diabetes without knowing about it many of them had already diabetes-related complications such as kidney disease, heart failure, etc. He further stated that Vitamin B1 deficiency was common in diabetes vitamin B12 deficient diabetics were at risk of damage to brain nervous system functions. Dr. Zahid Miyan (BIDE) noted that 80% of diabetics lived in lower middle income areas across the globe.

Speakers further observed that malnutrition was a major health problem, especially in the developing countries. However, even in developed countries malnutrition due to dietary habits was rising. According to WHO people are reckoned malnourished if: they are unable to utilize fully the food they eat due to diseases; they consume too many calories (over nutrition); their diet does not provide enough micronutrients for growth maintenance (under nutrition). Ladies gentlemen in the audience were also told that Merck was a pioneer in vitamin-B combination supplements with Neurobion (a combination of three B vitamins in coated tablets or injectable formulation) indicated in the treatment of vitamin B1, B6 B12 deficiencies, that was first marketed in Pakistan some four decades. Global pharmaceutical chemical company Merck, that employs some 40,000 people in 67 countries, reported a revenue of Euros 10.3 billion in 2011.
