Cancer Survivor and Texas Olive Orchard Entrepreneur Shares the Bounty with ...

ELMENDORF, Texas, Aug. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Saundra Winokur, owner of Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard in South Central Texas, will host the olive and wine tasting event Celebrate the Harvest – Share the Bounty on Saturday, October 13, 2012 on her orchard grounds. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Clearity Foundation, an organization that works to improve treatment options and outcomes for women with ovarian cancer.

The Celebrate the Harvest – Share the Bounty event will provide attendees the opportunity to sample olive oils, olives, wines, cheeses, and appetizers from olive growing regions around the world. Sandy Oaks Chef W. Scott Grimmitt will discuss wine and food pairings under the festive patio arbors while special guest Bonnie Walker of Savor SA will share her expertise in regional Italian cuisines in the new outdoor kitchen. A percentage of sales from the Sandy Oaks specialty gift shop featuring delicious olive-related foodstuffs for the pantry and pampering handmade spa and skin care products will be donated to The Clearity Foundation.

Winokur is an ovarian cancer survivor and wants to give back to those who supported her during her healing process. When undergoing treatment, she experienced an outpouring of support and compassion from friends, family and the medical community that she credits for helping her to survive the disease. During her cancer treatment last year, the extensive renovations and landscaping of the orchard kept her hopeful and focused on her future. The Celebrate the Harvest – Share the Bounty event will be the grand opening of the orchard’s new teaching kitchen, patios, gardens and surrounding stone buildings.

“This year’s harvest at Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard symbolizes renewal and prosperity, and I want to share the season’s bounty with women with ovarian cancer so they can continue to thrive as I have,” said Saundra Winokur, owner of the 260-acre orchard with more than 11,000 olive trees. Winokur herself is organizing the event and donating staff time and the grounds as part of her commitment to a successful fundraiser.

All money raised at the event will benefit The Clearity Foundation, the first organization making personalized medicine a reality for women with ovarian cancer. The funding will enable The Clearity Foundation to help more ovarian cancer patients individualize their treatment options in order to improve their chance of a cure. Today, 75% of women with ovarian cancer recur, and for them, the chances of a cure are less than 15%. By changing the one-size-fits-all approach and improving the information used in making treatment decisions, Clearity’s goal is for women with ovarian cancer to live longer, healthier lives.

“We are so grateful to Sandy Winokur and her team for giving back and helping us to make a difference for women with ovarian cancer,” says Hillary Theakston, executive director of The Clearity Foundation. “We need advocates like Sandy who are passionate about helping patients today to improve their treatment options using currently available technologies.”
